Byname Terms of Use

Last updated 2 October 2026.

Who these terms are with

Byname™ and its website are made by Axonite Global LLC. Using the app or the website means you accept these terms, and they sit alongside the privacy policy, which says what the app collects and why. If you don’t agree with them, please don’t use the app.

Using the app

The app is free to use, and what’s free doesn’t expire. We license it to you for your own personal use. You may not copy or resell the app, or the list of names and meanings inside it, or use it to build another product.

The unlock

There’s one optional purchase, the unlock, bought once through the App Store or Google Play. If you’ve paired with someone, it belongs to the room you share, so one purchase covers both of you. Payment, receipts, and refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their own rules, and a refund is asked for through them rather than through us. If the store refunds a purchase, the features it opened lock again.

Your room and its code

A room code is the key to a room: anyone who has it can join, and could take a place in it. Share it only with the person you’re choosing a name with. You’re responsible for what you type into a room, including the name you show your partner, any names you add, and any notes.

What not to do

Don’t try to get into a room that isn’t yours, guess codes, get around the unlock, interfere with how the app or the website works, or copy the catalog by automated means. We may close a room or block access when one of these happens.

The names and what they mean

Meanings, origins, pronunciations, and popularity figures are given in good faith and checked as carefully as we can, but a name dictionary is never free of mistakes and some origins are genuinely disputed. Please check anything that matters to you before you register a name. Whether a name may be registered where you live is a question for your local registry, not for us.

If you got the app from the App Store

Apple’s standard licensed application end user license agreement also applies. Where it and these terms cover the same thing, Apple’s agreement wins.

Changes, and when things go wrong

We may change, add, or remove features, and we’ll update this page and its date when the terms change. The app and the website are provided as is. As far as the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect or unforeseeable losses, and our total liability to you is limited to what you paid for the unlock. Nothing here takes away rights you have as a consumer under the law where you live.

Ending

You can stop using the app whenever you like, and Settings has “Erase everything in this app”. The privacy policy says how to have a shared room erased as well.

Governing law, and questions

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California and of the United States, except where the law where you live gives you rights these terms can’t take away. Questions about them go to the support address on this page.
